instructor at the state univ. of new york (SUNY) maritime college

Deck instructor at the Maritime College on the Training Ship Empire State VI. (TSES VI)
Sailing aboard as the Deck Training Officer (DTO) for the deck cadets.  This is the period of time the deck cadets accrue seatime required for their Coast Guard maritime license, deck or engine respectively.
My arrival to meet Captain and crew in New York to meet the ship 'Empire State VI' for the Summer Sea Term 2009 (SST). The training - 565 ft Length overall, 17,500 grt.

Sailing aboard as the Deck Training Officer (DTO) for the deck cadets.  This is the period of time the deck cadets accrue seatime required for their Coast Guard maritime license, deck or engine respectively. Most of the officers aboard the ship are also alumni of the ship as well.   In May 2009, it starts with the cadets from the Maritime College embarking the vessel, with their seabox : )
lt brings me memories of my days as a cadet, and my father being at the campus to help assist. lt is a great very memorable experience that gives me remembrance of my maritime path, and appreciation of the endeavor and efforts achieved where the road began.

The time to familiarize with the vessel is always important, as every vessel is specific and unique in its particulars.  Vessel familiarization is always something not to be thorough in.

The day at seas begins with the cadets standing the first at-sea watches.

Voyage planning and reviewing notes and nav. charts and the electronic nav. system.

During the trip, excursions out in the ports, in not assigned to a duty or watch.

Cadets in practical, hands on shipboard damage control exercises.  Reminds me to my days as a cadet, the exercises haven't changed much.  Everyone gets wet!
